Woman; Independent in judgment or action.

Creativity; is the source of uncommon thought igniting the Soul, allowing us to grow into freedom through the artistic journey, as our best self constantly evolves.

Dolls;
"For centuries humans have felt that Dolls emanate a holiness...an awesome and compelling prescience which acts upon persons, changing them spiritually." (Clarrisa Pinkola Estes)

The sacred art doll is a symbol of what we want to transform in ourselves and manifest in our lives.

In the first week we work with dreams to clarify the spirit of the Doll and rough-out an art sketch.

Sculpting the Head: The head projects the main character of the doll and "holds the vision" for the entire form. Will the eyes be open or closed? Will the eyes be crystals, semi-precious stones or hand blown glass eyes? What is the attitude of the face, the character, the emotional field of the spirit that is being created?

Creating the Body: This is a deeply personal journey as we create the structure and outward form from the inside out. Making the wire armature and sewing a cloth body. How do we feel about our body? What do we wish to transform? What medicine is to be put within the body itself: crystals, herbs, poems, sacred symbols?

After sculpting the head, hands and feet, paint is added to bring the doll's spirit to life. Here are the dolls heads listed from left-right; Eagle-Spirit Woman, Star-Spirit Woman and Bear-Spirit Woman.

The armature is adjusted and fitted to the correct proportions of the head and hands. The cloth body is stitched with healing crystals and herbs for personal medicine. Now is time for designing the hair and costume...

Kira is a Mother and a Poet who is creating Bear-Spirit Woman. The basic colors of the costume are chosen and the designing process begins. The women began to dream of costume details and personal medicine for others within the group.

Mary is an artist and a graduate student of psychology and has worked in the design field of computers. She is creating Eagle-Spirit Woman. Mary spent many hours researching native costumes and made a leather and beaded costume which took many joyful hours to create.

Tristy is a minister, and a graduate student of Arts and Consciousness and a dreamer who is creating Star-Spirit Woman. She received many dreams that evolved her spiritual process and doll making skills. In the second photo the spirit of the doll appears to be hovering over her hands.

Here are the completed Art Spirit Dolls and the happy Creatrix:

Art is Soul Medicine

In this fun and supportive women's circle you will create a doll that houses the spirit of your deep transformation. Women are using the ancient tools of creativity to rediscover the fun of handcraft, building community, reclaiming soul loss, and birthing a surer sense of self and inner direction.

Dolls hearken back to our ancient tribal roots and have been found in every indigenous culture. As mothers we made dolls for our children, for friends, for health, long-life, as talismans of power, and as medicine for the soul. Clarrisa Pinkola Estes in her book, "Women Who Run With The Wolves," talks of the cultural and personal importance of dolls through the ages, as well as her deep understanding of them;

For centuries humans have felt that dolls emanate both a holiness and a mana--an awesome and compelling prescience which acts upon persons, changing them spiritually. Dolls are believed to be infused with life by their makers. They are used as makers of authority and talismans to remind one of oneีs own power.

The doll is the symbolic homunculi, little life. It is the symbol of what lies buried in humans that is numinous. It is a small and glowing facsimile of the original Self. Superficially, it is just a doll. But inversely, there is a little piece of soul that carries all the knowledge of the larger soul-Self. In the doll is the voice, in diminutive, of old La Que Sabe, the One Who Knows.

The doll is related to the symbols of leprechauns, elf, pixie, fairy, and dwarf. In fairy tales these represent a deep throb of wisdom within the culture of the psyche. They are those creatures which go on with the canny and interior work, who are tireless. They work even when we sleep, most especially when we sleep, even when we are not fully conscious of what we are enacting. (pgs. 88-89)

Now is the time for the Feminine Principle to blossom, and successful rebirth of the Divine Feminine depends on every woman's ability to begin the process of emergence--emergence into a recognition of spiritual gifts, creative power, passion, and life purpose.As women emerge, so too, the divine feminine emerges. It is through our Women's Artistic, Crafts and Spiritual Heritage that we can develop a personal and direct connection with the Divine Feminine within.

This class is designed for beginning and advanced artists. Most students do not start class with sculpting ability. They may even doubt their "artistic" talents...but the doll spirit calls them. And before they know it, they are sculpting, painting, sewing, wigging and creating in all manner of new and delightful ways.

When you are done with the program you not only go home with your personal totem spirit doll, but you go home richer for the artistic skills, dream work, and the encouragement of your creative community circle of women.

Class starts in Summer 2003. 12 weeks Cost: $375 register. If you would like to join the Art Spirt Doll Circle please send an email to: enrolldolls@krisetnawest.com
